Scarce Colt M1878 "Frontier"
The M1878 is very similar to the M1877 except that it was made in larger calibers than the .41 LC. It is a very well made double action revolver and not as "finicky" as the M1877. The "Frontier has been made by Colt for export to Mexico, Germany, UK, and the Phillippines, and the non-US calibers tend to be on the rarer side and fetch a premium among collectors. This particular specimen was made for the British market, in .476 Eley. It is in very fine to excellent condition with a strong, accurate action, shiny bore with sharp rifling and tight lock-up. The nickel plating is 80%-plus on the frame and barrel, and about 20% on the cylinder. The hard rubber grips are excellent, without cracks or missing chips, and minimal wear. The 5 1/2 inch barrel is marked "COLT'S PT FA MFG CO HARTFORD CT USA DEPOT 14 PALL MALL LONDON." the serial number places manufacture at 1886. London proof marks on the cylinder and bottom of barrel. SN# 16629 rated Very Fine to Excellent overall.
