Cased Colt New Line 30 Pocket Revolver, .30 Rimfire, British Proofed, RARE!
The "New 30" of Colt's New Line of pocket revolvers was the rarest of them, and the only .30 caliber rimfire gun Colt ever produced. It, too, fell victim to the tidal wave of cheap suicide specials on the market in the 1870's and 80's, and was only produced for 3 years, from 1874 to 1876.
This one bears British proof marks and is in excellent condition. The nickel plating is 100% intact and the nitre-blue on the hammer, trigger and screw heads is vibrant. The markings and etched panel on the barrel are excellent. The gun has beautiful, aged ivory grips in perfect condition. The action is accurate and strong, and the cylinder indexes and locks properly. The bore of the 2 1/4 inch barrel is bright, with strong rifling and two small dark spots. The black faux-leather case is excellent, showing only minor handling marks and a few impressions in the lining. The case includes 5 rounds of vintage .30 rimfire ammo for which the buyer will need to produce a PAL. SN 6764, rated excellent overall.
History And Background
The “New Line” of Colt pocket revolvers came out at a time when the market was being flooded with cheap "suicide specials". From 1873 until about 1878 Colt attempted to compete with the likes of Hopkins & Allen, Hood, Norwich Pistol, and Whitney however they ceased production of all models except the .32 caliber by 1880. The firm argued that they would rather stop making them than compromise their high quality standards and therefore their higher cost. In 1875 a Colt pocket revolver sold for about $10, while a Hood or Norwich sold for less than $2.
$3,200
