Benjamin Sturman, London Travelling Pistol 62 cal
Benjamin Sturman was active in London from 1831 to 1867 and had shops in Union Street and Kingsland Rd. He was one of several Sturmans who worked in the gunmaking business around southern England. There were four in London and one in York, and they were probably all related.
This particular gun is an exquisitely made gentleman's travelling pistol in a whopping .62 (15mm) caliber with a heavy, octagonal barrel. The lock, hammer, breech and trigger guard are finely engraved, and there is a silver escutcheon inlaid in the stock with the monogram "WP". The barrel measures 6 1/2 inches. The action is crisp with a strong spring. The safety works in the half-cock position. Clean, undamaged nipple, excellent, finely checkered grip with only a few handling marks. There is a small repair on the right side of the stock. Marked "B STURMAN" on the lock plate and "LONDON" on top of the barrel. NSN, rated very fine to excellent overall.
